Some testimonials from Andy's students, past and present:

Dear Mr. Wasserman: You have given me so much over the last 3 years. I have learned more from you than from anyone else I've ever studied with and than I ever expected to. You have opened my eyes and ears to new territories in the areas of studying, playing, listening to and writing music. And perhaps most importantly - to me, at least - I feel that you have set me on the path that I will begin to travel in the coming months and follow for the rest of my life (God willing). As I head off to college as a major in compostion at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, I am giving you a bowl of fruit, symbolic of all the good things you have filled my "bowl" with over the past 3 years. Thank you so much!!

*

Dear Mr. Wasserman: I wanted to say thank you so much everything this year. I have learned so much from you, not just about music, but about all aspects of life. I have enjoyed talking with you about family, God, music, etc. You have been a great inspiration for me and I always walked away from our lessons feeling motivated. You are an amazing teacher, a great friend, and an incredible musician.

*

I want you to know that I think you have been the best teacher I have ever had. Not just musically, but in general. During our work together on the Lydian Chromatic Concept you have helped to completely change my direction as a musician and in life. It is hard to imagine where I would be now had I not met you.

College Entrance Essay on the person in your field (music) you admire the most, written by a student during his senior year in high school:

Someone who stands out in my mind as a person I truly admire is a man named Andy Wasserman. Andy has been my piano teacher for the past four years, and besides being the one who has improved my playing ability, he has affected my life in many other ways. Many times we have not even touched the piano until the very end of the lesson because of the conversations we have about our lives.

Simply by talking with Andy my personal beliefs have become much more adamant. His work ethic, values, and attitude have provided me with a strong adult role model whom I strive to emulate. As a professional musician Andy has heavy demands plauced on his time including teaching his students, performing, and also running his own multimedia music company. Andy has taught me that to reach my goals it will mean a great deal of work and very likely long hours. His strong work ethic was immediately a trait that I admired, and one I wished to adopt from him. Another trait Andy exhibits from which I have learned is his positive mental attitude.

He accomplishes his positive attitude through an intense love for his work. I believe it is incredibly important to enjoy everything that you do. Andy has taught me how essential it is to combine a positive mental attitude with a strong work ethic. This combination has enabled me to work hard at both my academics and music, and sometimes keep long hours because I love the "work" that I am doing.

It reminds me of a quote I once heard, "If you really love your job, you will never work a day in your life." This is very true because if you truly love that which you do, it does not seem to be work. Here again Andy has sets a great example for me which has led me to adopt and strengthen similar values. In all, I believe that Andy has provided an excellent role model for me. and has taught me much more valuable lessons than simply piano and music theory.

I started studying the Lydian Chromatic Concept in May, 2002 with Andy Wasserman using the recently released revised edition. These past 6 months have been both enlightening and enriching. As a full time professional musician and music educator, there were deep things in music that I had grasped aurally but could not explain. These things are now crystal clear. Through the Concept the law of gravity is apparent. I was pulled towards the Concept, and through patience and research ended up discovering Andy. I would like to thank Maestro Russell, whose genius and perseverance created this tonal wonderland. The Concept is heard in music all around us. The information in the latest edition is truly priceless!

*

Andy, Thank you for an AMAZINGLY inspiring week of taking your course "Music for Dancers." You are a fabulous teacher who understands learning styles that differ...and sensitively nurtures the acquisition of meaningful "tools" (musical and life). You inspire the spirit to hear and feel the music from the heart. I wish to have the opportunity to take your course again and be able to contribute in body as well as soul. Thanks again for helping me to begin to find "my groove" and for the musical understanding to make me feel that I'll be able to dance for my entire life.

George Russell's LYDIAN CHROMATIC CONCEPT OF TONAL ORGANIZATION is one of the most important theories of music of all time

Performer, composer and educator Andy Wasserman began his intensive private studies with George Russell in 1979 while earning his BM in Jazz Composition at the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston. Holistic Music Healing PDF Print E-mail

slide_b06dFrom the outset of his professional career and personal quest for the universal sound as an artist beginning very early in life, Andy Wasserman has continually explored and realized the deep connection and reality of music as a healing force.  The most ancient forms of music, whether from Africa, China, the Middle East or India, began as practices of medicine,  communication, and storytelling. Music started as the vehicle for lliving time capsules of people's history, wisdom and knowledge. As someone who attempts at all costs to walk his talk, Andy's life work in music has been - more than anything else - a powerful force for his own personal healing on the path which integrates his artistry and individual evolution towards self-realization.

Andy is of the firm conviction that music is a gift, given by the Creator to humankind in order to make us better listeners - so we can learn to listen to the most important things in life: listen to our hearts, listen to nature, listen to each other, listen to the Creator, etc.

It is the music in us that hears the music. Therefore, the ultimate purpose of music is to be a voice of unity and integration through a primary function of healing. This is how Andy defines the holistic approach to music as force for healing on all physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. Andy's many years of experience has been a real-life testament to this reality.

Wasserman uses music as a therapeutic modality in private individual sessions for music students with special needs, in participatory workshops and performances at sites and institutions  for special needs populations of all types, and in team building world music experiences for groups, companies and organizations that wish to use music to help them improve their communication and creativity.

AWheadshotNativeWEBBACKGROUND INFORMATION

He was employed as a full-time music therapist at the House of the Holy Comforter in the Bronx, New York from 1981-82. At that time, Andy received recognition for an award winning short video documentary done about his work by the New York State Council  of Elderly Affairs. He continued this line of work by throughout the 1980s by working as an independent consultant in major hospitals throughout the Northeast.

Andy has worked with  individuals and groups of all ages and developmental levels, including:

developmentally disabled
neurologically impaired
